Unlike solid welding wires, flux cored wires consist of a steel sheath filled with granular chemical fluxes. This complex composite geometry poses severe challenges during manufacturing. The mechanical properties, wire diameter tolerance, powder compaction, and overall feeding reliability of the finished wire are determined during the rough drawing phase.
The rough drawing process reduces the formed tubular wire (usually starting from 5.5mm to 8.0mm diameter) to an intermediate size. It requires extremely precise tension controls and slip-less capstan traction. Any excessive elongation or tension fluctuations during rough drawing can cause local thinning of the tube, uneven powder density distribution, or wire breaks.
