Premium Flux Cored Welding Wire (FCW) Production Lines Integrated with Industry 4.0 Smart Manufacturing

Understanding E71T-1 Flux Cored Wire Production Complexity

In modern manufacturing, AWS A5.20 E71T-1 gas-shielded flux-cored wire serves as the backbone for structural steel fabrication, heavy machinery design, shipbuilding, and pressure vessel manufacturing. Unlike solid wires, which feature uniform cross-sections, drawing E71T-1 requires managing a delicate tube-and-powder profile.

The core challenge of producing E71T-1 cored wire lies in preserving the powder-filling ratio (usually 13% to 17% by weight) across the entire length of the wire spool. Any slight instability in tension, vibration, or reduction ratio during drawing causes powder shifting, core-voids, or outer sheath failures. These irregularities trigger welding defects like porosity, spatter, or mechanical properties mismatch.

Beijing Orient Pengsheng Tech Co., Ltd. addresses these engineering demands by developing specialized, straight-line, non-slip cored wire drawing machines. By reducing mechanical twist, utilizing precision rolling cassettes instead of standard friction dies, and employing closed-loop tension control, our machines preserve the core geometry. This advanced approach delivers consistent arc stability and low diffusible hydrogen in the final weld deposit.

E71T-1 Technical Spec

Classification: AWS A5.20 / ASME SFA-5.20

Shielding Gas: 100% CO2 or 75-80% Ar / Balance CO2

Flux Filling Target: 14.5% ± 0.5%

Diameter Range: 1.2mm, 1.4mm, 1.6mm

Key Applications: Marine vessels, heavy earthmovers, infrastructural columns.

Rolling Cassettes Technology

By substituting friction dies with rolling cassettes, our machines minimize drawing friction and heat buildup. This design preserves the critical chemical composition of the internal flux core.

Synchronous PLC Control

Profibus/Profinet communication manages real-time motor speeds across drawing capstans, eliminating sudden tension changes that disrupt powder distribution.

Direct-Drive Water Cooling

Internal double-channel water cooling prevents thermal stress on the thin sheath of the E71T-1 cored wire, keeping its mechanical properties consistent.

The Mechanics of High-Speed Cored Wire Forming & Reduction

The conversion of low-carbon steel strip into a functional E71T-1 cored welding wire involves three main processes: forming, filling, and sizing. To maintain quality across high production runs, engineers must optimize the reduction ratios at each step.
1. Precision Slitting and Degreasing: The process begins by slitting wider steel coils into precise narrow strips. The edges must be clean and free of burrs to prevent seam defects during forming. Next, an ultrasonic cleaning machine removes oil and residual rolling lubricants from the strip surface. Any oil left on the strip will contaminate the flux, leading to carbon pickup and high diffusible hydrogen levels in the weld deposit.
2. Continuous U-Forming & Flux Feeding: The clean strip passes through a series of forming rolls that shape it into a U-channel. Concurrently, a computerized powder feeder drops a controlled stream of flux powder into the channel. Modern feeding systems use gravimetric dosing to keep powder distribution uniform, even when line speeds change.
3. Seam Closing & Primary Reduction: After filling, the strip edges are folded over to form either a butt-seam or an overlap seam. The closed wire then goes through primary reduction rolls, which compress the loose powder to eliminate air pockets. This compression helps secure the powder inside the sheath, preventing shifting during high-speed drawing.
4. Straight-Line Drawing with Rolling Cassettes: Standard drawing blocks can create torsional stress on the wire, twisting the seam and leading to powder leakage or wire breakage. Straight-line drawing machines keep the wire in a straight path with minimal twist. Rolling cassettes gradually reduce the wire diameter to its final size (such as 1.2mm) while keeping the internal flux core centered.
